Salvation is the state of being saved from eternal separation from God. Since humanity sinned against God, there was an eternal separation that came between mankind and God. It was important to have a sacrifice before God to have a continued relationship with him but there was no perfect atonement that could cover the sins of mankind. Thus, Jesus came and took the price of our sins to reconcile us back to God. Through believing in Him, we are able to be born again and be saved from eternal damnation.
Our faith in Christ is what gives us eternal life and access to the throne of grace, allowing us to have a relationship with God and call Him Abba, Father. When we perceive the realm of this world through eternal eyes, we see that it does not have an everlasting horizon but ends at the borders of death, where life meets the question: what’s next?
Salvation was never cheap. It cost Jesus, His life—He, who is eternally God—not only to become human but also to die a shameful death on the cross. Salvation never came through works, nor to the righteous through the eyes of men, but through the eyes of God and through grace by faith alone.
The work of Christ is complete in itself; we do not add to it. Through having faith in Him, we are saved from eternal death. We strengthen our faith by knowing Him who saved us, anchoring ourselves in Him as we grow in edification to look like Him.
“Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.” Ephesians 6:13 NIV
In this section of Ephesians, Paul brings us into the awareness that, as Christians, we are standing on the ground of a spiritual battlefield. He explains how we are saved and brought into an ongoing war, constantly preyed upon by the lion who seeks to devour our souls and drag us into the darkness he embodies. There will come a day that tests our faith, which is why we need to put on the full armor of God. These are postures of the mind that we must take as Christian soldiers who fight against spiritual forces—forces that cannot be defeated by carnal weapons.
In Genesis 3, we see the story of the fall of mankind, where the enemy deceives the woman by planting seeds of doubt, making her desire to believe that she knows better than God, even for herself. He tells her half-truths (which are still lies), promising that she will be “like God.” What happened in Genesis 3 is much like what happens in our daily lives as we encounter the battlefield—only now it is tailored to our personal situations. The enemy creates distractions and plants lies in our thoughts, telling us things completely opposite to what the Word of God says. These schemes of our adversary, Satan, cannot be defeated by our own might. It is the power we have in Christ—received through salvation—that enables us to overcome him.
The helmet of salvation is the wisdom of God through Jesus Christ our savior. “but to those whom God has called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.” 1 Corinthians 1:24. Life is built by wisdom, and our eternal life is built by the salvation that is the ultimate wisdom of God, personified through His Son, Jesus Christ. When we wear the helmet of salvation, we are guarding our minds with the knowledge and wisdom of God.
A helmet refers to a protective covering designed to shield the skull and brain, providing protection through its strong material, traditionally made of metal and leather. Just as the helmet protects one of the most vital parts of our physical body—the skull, which houses the brain—salvation protects the core components that make up our spiritual life.
The concept of the truth of Jesus stands in contrast to the many The foundation of salvation is the faith we have in Christ Jesus as our Savior, which we have received through hearing the gospel. Through this faith, we come to know the true God, and the salvation He offers is available to everyone; we respond by faith and are saved. With this knowledge of being saved, a complete transformation takes place in our lives, as we now understand that our eternity is secure. Freed from the fear of death by the knowledge of the truth, the peace of salvation accompanies us wherever we go.
While the helmet of salvation is the assurance of our salvation, and the knowledge that we are saved is significant, the helmet of salvation extends far beyond that. It encompasses the entire scope of salvation: past, present, and future. In this sense, we have been saved, we are being saved, and we will be saved.
We live in a world where it is difficult to live righteously. The world is harsh and hostile toward those who desire to reflect the nature of Christ in their daily lives. Yet Jesus did not leave us without protection in the face of these dangers. It is through the helmet of salvation that we protect ourselves from the traps and deceptions laid by the enemy.
One of the things we must realize in this walk and warfare is that we are not fighting for victory, but from a place of victory. The victory Jesus secured is ours by faith. That’s why Paul, in Ephesians 6:13, commands us to stand firm. The Christian walk is a daily effort to live out the victory of Jesus.
The key here is salvation. With salvation comes the awareness of our position in Christ and the presence of the Holy Spirit. With the right understanding our position and right relationship with the Holy Spirit standing firm and walking in the victory is so much easier.
Different types of activities require wearing a helmet, and one common example is riding a bicycle. In Ethiopia, however, riding a bike without a helmet often seems normal and optional. Many people overlook the hidden dangers that come from not properly protecting themselves, only realizing the consequences after an accident happens.
But when it comes to our spiritual life, wearing a helmet is never optional. The helmet of salvation sits atop our spiritual armor and leads our steps with the wisdom of God, helping us stand against the attacks of the enemy. It is never optional to wear our helmet of salvation. With every step we take in life, we must ensure that the wisdom of God—which begins with the knowledge of Christ—is leading our lives as the governing authority.
